Stamp Collecting can range from very simple, to quite complex.   Some collections are nothering more than a few glassine envelopes filled with some stamps, and a pair of stamp tongs.  Other colections are like museum displays, assembled in large panels with much information presented.   Some people just like to collect stamps with birds, flowers or animals on them.  Others are drawn to more intricate subjects like stamp printing and perferating errors, shades of ink, or types of printing and engraving.   There is something for everyone, and stamp collectors come from every walk of life!!

• Postage stamps - particular countries and/or time periods
• Airmail stamps - stamps may be required for airmail, which is typically more expensive and has special postage rates
• Commemorative stamps - stamps to commemorate events, anniversaries etc., on sale for a limited time
• Definitive stamps - the most common type of stamps
• Postage due stamps are special stamp applied by a post office to mail bearing insufficient postage. The stamps were issued in several denominations to make up different amounts due
• Revenue stamps- stamps issued to pay taxes
• Sheets - Postage stamps issued in  large sheets of 40, 100 or even 200 stamps, smaller sheetlets with 16 or 20 stamp, miniature, souvenir and corner or plate blocks.
• Postal stationery - includes government-issued postal cards, aerograms, letter card, wrappers, envelopes etc., that have an imprinted stamp.
• Postmarks or postal markings in general.  This includes pre-cancels.

• Perfins - Stamps perferated to prevent mis-use and theft of postage, usually with a company's name or abbreviation.

• First day covers - (FDCs) - envelopes with stamps attached and canceled on the first day that the stamp was issued. Most modern FDCs bear designs, called "cachets" related to the theme of the stamp issued.
  

• EFO - Stamps and postal stationery items that have production errors are called Errors, Freaks or Oddities, depending on the type of the error. A particular error is usually relatively rare, but there are many of them.stamps and postal stationery items that are different than intended... They may be misprinted, mis-cut, or otherwise mishandled during the production process and are therefore special.

• Topical stamp collecting - many collectors choose to organize their philatelic collection on the theme of the stamps, covers, or postmarks. Popular topical themes are animals, dogs, cats, butterflies, birds, flowers, art, sports, Olympics, maps, Disney, scouting, space, ships, Americana (topics relating to the US), stamps on stamps, famous people, chess, Chinese new year, and many others.

• Federal Duck Stamps (stamps for duck hunting licenses, mainly U.S. with some other countries such as Canada and New Zealand)

• Maximum cards, these are postcards where the stamp is on the same side as the picture and they have a close connection.
• Souvenir pages - with first day canceled stamps on a page describing all design, printing and issuing details. This is similar to first day covers except that it is done on a printed sheet of paper instead of an envelope, and the specification of the stamp is printed by the official source.
• Cinderella stamps - stamp-like labels that are not valid for postage
